We are committed to providing our students with a diverse range of activities and experiences that not only engage and inspire, but also empower them to make informed pathway choices as they move onto high school and beyond. These include:
Ako…To Learn
A school-wide programme giving students the opportunity to experience options such as second language learning, gardening, philosophy, sport, coding, fitness, ukulele, visual art, robotics, drama, literature, enterprise, Bollywood, construction, etc.
After School Enrichment Courses
These courses are designed to be fun, challenging, and exciting and are facilitated by experienced tutors. Examples of what may be on offer include: badminton, cooking, drama, languages, dance, indoor soccer, cheerleading, and origami.
Cactus
Every year around 200 students are involved in the production of Cactus, our daily television show. Each Cactus show consists of daily school and sports notices as well as a variety of different segments. Students can be involved in planning, creating, presenting, or producing the show.
Community Service
Our students are regularly involved in community projects such as fundraising for charities, community clean up, and planting projects. Over the last 30 years we have raised $302,493 for the annual World Vision 40 Hour Famine appeal.
Education Outside the Classroom
GEIS students have numerous opportunities to participate in new encounters outside of the classroom. These include class field trips, outdoor education experiences, our annual Tongariro Tramp, and overseas exchanges with our sister schools.
Environmental Education
At GEIS our aim is to promote sustainable thinking and practices. Students have opportunities to get involved in projects such as recycling, planting, worm farming, gardening, and planting.
Kapa Haka and Pasifika Groups
All students are welcome to join our Kapa Haka and/or Pasifika groups, which meet once a week to learn a variety of waiata, haka, and dance which they perform at special events, assemblies, and competitions.
Music and Dance
A number of music opportunities are on offer each year including concert band, rock bands, choir, and music lessons with private tutors during school hours. Outside tutors work with our dance groups and prepare them for a range of performances and competitions.
If your child would like to learn an instrument at school this year, you can register here.
Information about the instruments available and costs are available on the form.
Production
Every alternate year, GEIS delivers a production of the highest quality. Students can be involved in performing, creating props and stage sets, backstage crews, sound and lighting crews, make up teams, and photo and video production.
Sport
GEIS has a full-time Director of Sport who organises all aspects of our comprehensive sports programme. For detailed information of what is on offer please check out Sport Programmes under the Learning tab on this website.
Student Leadership
Each year a student leadership team is selected consisting of Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputies, and Maori and Pasifika Student Leaders. This team facilitates our hardworking Student Council, which has representatives from every class. Other student leadership roles include Sports Captains, International Student Ambassadors, Enviro-Leaders, and Cactus Secret Agents.
